The Gray Area Concept
Authenticity is the key to the door that keeps us locked in the social constructs of oppression, injustice, and separation.
Human existence is incapable of being simplified into the black and white boxes implemented from the past.
As a collective, we are bringing light and recognition to the gray areas between them with the hope of creating equality for all.
To visually convey the spectrum that exists between two polar opposites, I merge traditional techniques with non-traditional concepts. My art practice creates undefinable gray areas both visually and conceptually. These hybrids of paintings and drawings, made from layers of charcoal and gesso on canvas, are monochromatic figurative drawings that share the stories and identities within LGBTQIA+ communities. The vast spectrum of contrasting grays blur the once distinguishable perimeters of what began as pure black and white. While the process and content within the layers are complex, the message reflected in every work is simple: the world was and will never be black and white, every existence falls somewhere in between, a unique shade of gray, each with a purpose that contributes to the overall picture. Knowledge is power and access to knowledge creates social change.
